Halloween Costumes

Every year, the time comes when I have to come up with a costume for Halloween. Since I am a 1st grade teacher, dressing up for Halloween isn't optional! Every year I think I am going to be something amazing and every year something happens that makes me go hmmmmm. For example, the first year I taught school (12 years ago---wow, 12 years!!!) I dressed up as a Nerd. I was a dang good nerd, so good in fact that I won the faculty "best costume" award.....but it wasn't a hit with my first graders. When they saw me, they asked me what I was. I responded, "I am a nerd." Of course I never thought about what a 1st grader might not know.....they then asked me what a nerd was. "Someone who likes school a lot..." was my reply. "But everyone likes school Miss Winward, so why are you dressed so weird with toilet paper hanging out of your pants?" Yeah, not a great costume.
The next year I dressed up as a witch and spray-painted my hair black. When the kids came in to the classroom I said (in a witch voice), "Come in my little pretties." Well, that was also a bad idea. I had kids burst into tears! I am not kidding, full on crying. I removed my hat and everything and they still wouldn’t come near me.
The next year I decided to play it safe and dress up as Jan Brady. I had the greatest pink polyester suit outfit and long blond wig. I looked dang groovy if you asked me. Well, bomb again. When the kids saw me, they asked me who I was. When I said Jan Brady they said, "Who is she?" Obviously, the Brady Bunch reruns aren't on as much as I thought. ;-)
Now, I am not going to bore you to death with every costume story of mine (and I have quite a few), but I have to say I thought I covered my bases this year.
When my 1st grade co-workers were discussing wearing similar costumes I perked up. We ended up saying a witch costume of sorts. I spoke with a friend of mine and she said she had a great costume for me to use. I ran over to her house and she handed me the Evil Queen costume from Snow White. Perfect I thought, a Disney character. The kids will not only know the story of Snow White but all of them would be able to recognize my costume......right.....WRONG!!! MANY (not all--thank goodness) students, co-workers, parents and staff kept calling me Magnificent from Sleeping Beauty, instead of the Evil Queen from Snow White. Some even asked me who I was suppose to be!?!?! Well, so much for the perfect costume.....thanks goodness it is another 365 days before I have to wear another one!!!

Me trying to look mean....

Making ones face white is harder than it looks!!! It took me almost an hour and half to get my paint to look like this....and it still wasn't perfect.

The little piece of fabric dangling from my head made me itch ALL day long!!!

At least this year the kids weren't afraid of me.....

Thanks Tina for letting me borrow your costume! You are the best!!!

I Can't Wait To Be An Old Lady

My grandma handed me this today and asked me to read it....I had to have her explain who the people where in the letter (since I wasn't even born yet) but I had to laugh out loud and some of the lady's thoughts....I guess getting older has it's advantages!

Dear Editor,
The world is an old lay's oyster. She has it made. This profound conviction came to me more than twenty years ago right from a genuine and practicing old lady. This dear soul was in her late eighties, had the keenest zest for living I ever saw, ate like a horse, belonged to everything in town, never had a free weekend and attributed it all to the fact that she made a career of being an old lady. "Honey," she said, "you can do all the things you never had the nerve to do before. You can speak to anyone, you can say anything that comes into your mind--and if you do something that is really too naughty, all you have to do is look kind of vague and everyone will say, 'Well, she's old, she doesn't really realize---.' She winked wickedly. "Of course there are a few things you can do to get ready for it. Take care of your health, for one. For another, look forward to it."
You might say that I have since become a student of old ladyism, and I have learned a lot. Most old ladies seem to like being old ladies. When you find one who is a whining, miserable pain in the neck, ten to one she did not like being a middle-aged lady, or a young lady or a child. Don't count her. She's out to give the whole organization a black eye.
You don't even have to take my word for it. How many times have you described someone as a "sweet little old lady"? Dozens. If she is not a complete heller, every old lady is automatically a "sweet little old lady." Just think back to some TV programs you've seen. Sweet little old thing up there with the master of ceremonies! The audience is for her even before she has opened her mouth.
(Before some plaintive little voice asks, "But what about the old men? Isn't everything the same for them? I want to answer. No. It's a man's world, perhaps, but not to the world of old age. Oh, he can be an Old Godger, or a Nice Old Guy, or eve an Fine Old Gentleman. But let HIM cut up on a TV program or flirt and the reaction is usually , "look at the old fool. Who does he think he is?" It doesn't seem to bit fair, but that's the way it is, and I onlyh mention it in passing."
The nice think about the old-lady business is the latitude. You can even choose your own type. You don't have to be the Spring Byington or the Billie Burke type. The old lady who first gave me the idea was definitely the Edna May Olliver type right down to the black umbrella. If you happen to be plump, the Dear Old White-Aproned Grandmother with the cookie jar may be for you. Or if you have always been two-fisted, you can still come into your own by being the Gruff, Crusty but with Heart of Gold type. If you are tired of doing big things for yourself, you can be the Sweet, Helpless type. In fact, you can even let go completely and be the Absent-Minded sloppy type. Who else can get on a bus, clad in an old wool skirt, pajama top, feather boa, sneakers, battered straw hat, and carrying a shopping bag, bunch of grapes and a roll of chicken wire, and be treated like Queen Victoria? An old Lady--that's who!
Esthetically, of course, the Billie Burke and Spring Byington types are the acme of perfection. But almost in the same class is the Gentlewoman of the Old School. The Dowager Queen comes along in this category too. Or maybe you can't fit into any of these pictures. For myself, I have come to no conclusion except that I'm going to be waiting for it with a complete supply of ammunition.
Every day thousands of dollars are spent by women who are tyring to hang onto youth. Thousands of articles and books are written on the fascination subject of staying young. I wish someone would honestly tell me why. There is much joy at eavery age that I cannot imagine wanting to build onto one phase of life at the cost of another. A person may want to stay young in heart and mind, but why must she also stay young in the face? There is real beauty in age if we will allow such a thing in our lives. I know. I've seen it. I am aiming to have it too.
Stay young if you want to. I'm going to get out my laces and lavender in a few years and have a ball.
Yours,
Molly Crowdis

OH MY GOODNESS!!!

I invite a six grade class to come into my classroom twice a week to "buddy read" with my first graders. This has been a positive experience for my first graders, as well as for the sixth graders. Unfortunately, there are more sixth graders than there are first graders so I have about 5 "helpers" help me correct papers, check homework folders, etc. Well, today as we are checking homework folders a student turned to one of his friends and told him to be patient. The sixth grader quickly responded (NO JOKE), "Chill out, patients is a virgin!" Not a eye was batted. All five acted as if he spoke the truth and there was nothing to think twice about. WOW! Vocabulary needs to taught better in sixth grade!!!!

My Favorite Chocolate Chip Cookies

My sister Ilene has always made the most amazing chocolate chip cookies ever. Due to her talent, she was always "in charge" of making the cookies when we were in junior high and high school. I often used her recipe throughout college because it was/and is that great! Ilene's cookie recipe is AMAZING......love your cookies Ilene.....and if you would want her recipe you will need to ask her for it---it will be worth you asking (not my place to give out her recipe)....so please don't get me wrong when I share what I have discovered....

The year after I graduated from BYU, a friend of mine brought chocolate chip cookies into work. They were REALLY good....I was shocked that I was actually thinking that they were almost as good as Ilene's cookies---blasphemy I know, but true nonetheless. They were a bit different in taste, but also amazing. I asked her for her recipe. She said she made it up.....hey just like Ilene.

Well, one day I thought, I wonder what would happen if I combined the two amazing recipes.......WOW!!! is what I thought happened.......Scrumptious, out-of-this-world, mouth watering heaven burst upon my taste buds. They were as good as Ilene's cookies---I couldn't say better because one can't compare perfection with perfection...but you get my point.

Then a sad thing happened, I lost my recipe box. I thought for sure I would never be able to make my combo recipe again. Luckily, I found my recipe box a few months ago. I was so excited about finding the combo recipe that I immediately whipped up a batch of these wonderful cookies and brought them to school to celebrate the ending of my co-workers cancer treatment. My co-workers told me they thought they were great.

Then today, when I felt the urge to make chocolate chip cookies, I went to get my recipe box and couldn't find it. I searched for about 10 minutes before I found it. When I opened the box I thought, "I really ought to archive this recipe just in case I loose my recipe box again." So, below you will see my combo Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe that I love. I am only posting this recipe to archive it before I lose it again! ;-) Although, you are more than welcome to use it....as long as you let me know what you think of them!

It makes A LOT of cookies, but when I tried to 1/2 the recipe they did not turn out as well. You can freeze them (they freeze well) and "try" to make them last longer....but I have found that they are usually eaten too fast!

Happy eating to whomever feels the urge to make a scrumptious cookie!

Ilene and Gaylynn's Combo Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe....and Winnie's favorite.

Combine and mix the following ingredients for 5 minutes (not optional)
1 1/4 cup shortening
1/2 butter (NOT MARGARINE)
1 3/4 cups brown sugar
1 cup granulated sugar
2 1/2 tsp. vanilla (preferably Mexican Vanilla)
3 eggs

In a separate bowl, combine:
4 cups flour
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda

Add the dry ingredients to the creamed items.

Stir in 2 bags of MILK chocolate chips (NOT SEMI-SWEET CHIPS)

Bake 375 for about 6-10 minutes (depends on where you live....I cook them for about 8-9 minutes)

DO NOT OVERCOOK! Light brown on the edges only ;-)

I have been tagged....see if you have as well!

I've been "tagged" by Paula.....so this is for you Paula! Although I am still stuck wondering what I am suppose to do about 4 random things I like about my husband ;-)

4 random things I like about my husband:
He hasn't come into my life and made himself known (is that really a good thing?), he always keeps me guessing (like..."where the heck are you?!?!), he allows me to balance the money and he has not demanding anything of me.....yet ;-)
4 movies that I can watch more than once: Lord of the Rings, Pride and Prejudice, North and South, and How to Lose a Guy in Seven Days.
4 shows that I watch: I honestly don't have time to watch a lot of TV.....I usually can be caught watching videos of 24 and The Office....or watching the news or some history show.
4 places I've been today: Walmart, Costco, a walk with April around the temple and at home.
4 people who email me regularly: I don't regularly get emails because I don't usually email anyone.....I am more of a "get on the phone" type person!
4 places I've visited: Last four places I visited were my trips to Chicago/Springville, Orofino Id (family reunion), Portugal/Azores trip and a New York/Canada trip
4 places I would like to go: Italy, Austria. Scotland, Ireland
4 things I'm looking forward to in the next year: Getting into my condo (I hope), finishing up my ESL endorsement, having Thanksgiving at Ilene's house this year, and going to Colorado to see the BYU vs. Airforce game!!

"WHAT DO YOU WANT?"

On Friday, I had two of my students read me a book called, "Crabby Cat's Phone Call." Within the book Crabby Cat answers the phone yelling, "What do you want!" Henny Hen, his friend, is on the other line and tells him that he wasn't being nice and that he needed to answer the phone more politely. The illustrations are hilarious and I was surprised that neither child seemed to find any humor in the story. Due to this lack of emotion, I assumed that the kids did not comprehend the words that they were reading (a typical problem with first graders) and asked them to tell me what happened at the beginning, middle and end of the story. As we discussed, I realized that they clearly understood what was happening in the story. So then I asked them why they WOULDN"T answer the phone like Crabby Cat. The cute little girl piped in quickly by saying, "I can't answer the phone like Crabby Cat because our phone is broken. If it wasn't broken then I could answer it like Crabby Cat.” She then continues to tell me why her phone is broken. I decided then that I’d better ask the other student what his thoughts were so that I could possibly bring the conversation back around as to why one does not answer the phone like Crabby Cat. I quickly turned to the little boy and asked him why he wouldn’t answer the phone like Crabby Cat. The little boy responded, "I do answer the phone that way." I bit my lip so as not to laugh out loud. I guess I should have said, “Why SHOULDN'T we answer the phone like Crabby Cat.”

Which Vinyl?

So, I am now picking out my floors...for the 3rd time.....that is if you don't count the times I actually changed my mind! :-) The building market has been pretty bad, and the last flooring company went out of business, so I was forced to go pick out flooring again.
My first choices of flooring were hardwood floor. Then I went to laminate because I couldn't justify the money on an investment condo. I now have decided to save even more money and go with vinyl. It isn't hardwood, but vinyl isn't what it use to look like...it looks pretty good!
So here is where you can help! I went to pick my flooring and saw a vinyl in a bathroom and thought it looked amazing......the problem is I can't picture in my mind what it would look like in a larger kitchen. The flooring guy told me it would look amazing...but I still am a bit cautious! So let me know what you think.....I really won't care if you love it or absolutely hate it. I just would like an outside opinion. ;-)

This is what will be going in the two bathrooms and laundry room (it is a little darker than my first choice).

Twilight

Two & 1/2 years ago, while visiting teaching, Heather suggested that I read Twilight. She told me it was about vampires, but that it wasn't what I think it would be like. She told me that it wouldn't win any literary award, but that it would suck me in and that I wouldn't be able to put it down until I finished. I nodded and thought, yeah right...a vampire book. She also suggested a few other books which I purchased. I read her suggestions and LOVED them all. She kept telling me that if I really liked the books she suggested that I ought to read Twilight.
Well, one lonely boring night, I decided to go get a book at Barnes and Noble. When entering the bookstore and immediately ran into a huge pile of Twilight. I quickly grabbed a copy and returned home. I don't think I slept much for the next two days. Heather was right, it wouldn't win any literary awards but it sucked me in and I wasn't able to put it down until I had finished it. I personally loved it! I think it is the best of the series....
Well, the Twilight movie is on its way! I can't wait to see it! I think the new trailer is awesome!

Happy Autumn!

Someone is really excited about Fall!
